File Buddy 5.1.1 was primarily developed and tested using MacOS 8.5 and 8.6. It has also been tested to a more limited extent with MacOS 8.1 and System 7.6.1. There are currently no known compatibily issues with MacOS 8.5 and only one with 8.6 involving the online help. Users of MacOS 8.6 should read the file 'MacOS 8.6 and Online Help'.
Read the Known Problems section in the installed Read Me for a description of some minor issues in MacOS 8.1 and earlier releases of the system software.
File Buddy 5.1 addressed the most significant Appearance issues, but it is not fully Appearance saavy. Because these are asthetic issues, they will be addressed as time permits. We hope you agree that functionality is more important.
Find Orphans... now optionally displays orphans in a window that lets you flag both creators and individual files to ignore in a scan. The window also lets you assign a new creator to orphaned files.
A new Web menu has been added, with commands that take your web browser to the File Buddy home page, download page, and Kagi payment page for File Buddy. Users of MacOS 8.6 or later can also use it to quickly see if they have the latest version File Buddy.
The inventory feature in the Cleaning menu has been renamed "snapshot" in an attempt to more accurately describe the nature of the feature and reflect the fact that only snapshots of the same directory can be compared. The online help contains a detailed description of the snapshot feature.
The Snapshot to Text... and Compare Snapshots... commands are much faster and no longer modal. Take Snapshot... is still modal because creating, deleting, and moving files during the process of taking a snapshot can cause the resulting snapshot to be invalid.
In the Find window, the Recent Searches pop-up menu is now smart enough not to add the current search if it already exists in the list. In that case File Buddy now moves it to the top of the list.
Added contextual menu commands to remove items of the selected type or creator to the appropriate columns in the file list window.
There is a new section in the online help about uninstalling software.
Fixes - All bugs reported in v5.1 have been fixed in 5.1.1.
The info window now recognizes text and picture clipping files.
The Apple Help Viewer application installed with MacOS 8.6 will not display the content of HTML files that are not located in the folder containing the Help Viewer application. File Buddy now allows aliases to items in the File Buddy Support folder as a part of providing a workaround for this.
The Find Window
The disk pop-up was not updating when new disks were selected by clicking if the window was in fewer options mode.
The Set: pop-up would look mangled whenever the window was in fewer options mode and an action cleared the window.
Several fixes to the code handling the focus outlines.
Some searches were disregarding criteria such as label and only report aliases. These have all been fixed.
Every effort has been made to insure File Buddy is as reliable and stable as possible. Nevertheless, as with all software, you use File Buddy entirely at your own risk.
